Winter Home Security Tips

Keeping your home safe and secure is important all year long.  However, with the coming winter also comes an increased chance of break-ins.  With longer nights in the winter, burglars have more time to break into homes under the cover of darkness.  At ZS Locksmith, we want to keep you and your family safe. Here are our top home security tips to keep your family safe this winter.

Lock Check

Locks wear out over time the more that they’re used, and a worn out lock is not effective at keeping your home secure.  What do most people do more in the summer than they do any other time of year? Leave their homes to be outside – with you and your family constantly going in and out of your home during the summer, those locks typically wear out a lot faster in the summer than they do in any other season.

Worn out locks are a major concern for home safety, and if you don’t regularly maintain your locks, you can have a serious problem.  A simple way to keep your locks working correctly is regular lock lubrication. A lock is a very complex mechanism that has a lot of moving parts.  Lubricating the inside of your locks allows those moving parts to work effectively every time. After applying the lubrication in the lock, simply run your key in and out of the lock to spread the lubrication throughout the lock.  This simple maintenance step can make all the difference when a burglar chooses your home.

After years of wear and tear, it may be time to simply replace the locks altogether.  The great news is that there are plenty of durable lock upgrades to choose from. If you’re upgrading your locks in your home we always recommend a deadbolt if you don’t already have one.  A deadbolt greatly reinforces your home security and can be tough for a burglar to get around.

Extra Security Upgrades

Aside from upgrading your existing locks to better models, there are some other easy security upgrades that you can make to maximise your home security.  We’ve seen countless homes with security lights and they’ve been proven to be successful. With longer nights in the winter, a security light may be a good investment.

Security lights are primarily motion-activated, meaning they can pick up when a burglar may be lurking outside of your home.  The bright lights will quickly turn off and scare away any potential burglars. This simple and inexpensive investment can make all the difference in your home security.

Be Tricky

Even with upgraded locks and security lights, your home may still be the victim of a burglary.  An effective way to ward off thieves is to make it look like you’re home. Most burglars won’t break into a home when they think the owners are there.  An empty home is an easy target for a burglar regardless of your security upgrades.

By simply leaving on some internal lights or keeping your television on, you can make it seem like you’re at home and can deter burglars from entering your home.  If you’re gone on a long holiday it’s a good idea to have someone regularly stop by to check on your home – if they’ve got a spare key, then can go in and turn on different lights in the home to really make it seem like you’re there.
