What is a transponder car key replacement?
A transponder key has a small coded chip built in alongside the metal blade. The blade turns the lock, while the chip has to be recognised by your car immobiliser before the engine will start. That is why a replacement usually means both cutting the key accurately and programming it to your vehicle.
Some cars use a separate remote with a transponder key, some combine the blade, buttons and chip in one housing, and newer models use a proximity smart key you keep in your pocket. When should you enquire about a replacement transponder key?
It is time for a replacement when the key is missing, the housing or blade is damaged, the chip is no longer recognised, or the key has become unreliable.
