What should you do first?
Remove pressure from the key and do not twist it further. If the key is outside the lock or ignition, place the pieces in a small container so no component is lost. If part of the key remains inside the vehicle, avoid probing with improvised tools because the surrounding mechanism can be damaged. Tell the locksmith exactly where the broken piece is located before a booking is made.
Can a cracked casing still be used?
A cracked case may expose or loosen the internal electronics. Continued use can allow moisture, dirt or movement to affect those parts. If the blade and electronics are intact, a suitable replacement shell may sometimes be considered, but compatibility depends on the exact key design. Tape or glue can interfere with buttons and seams, so it should not be treated as a reliable repair.
